The call for applying Lean principles to IT organisations had been growing since the early 1990’s and, after decades of application and development of the Lean philosophy within production industries, the principles were transferred to service organisations. The key driver behind this development was the continued difficulty of IT to deliver the required value to its customers.
Lean Principles are concerned with:
- Increasing customer value
- Eliminating waste (work that does not add value)
- Management as a facilitator
- The involvement of all employees
- Continual improvement
- Preserving value with less work
Lean IT is an extension of Lean Principles, applied in an IT environment. The approach is a way of thinking and acting, focussing heavily on organisational culture. Lean IT is associated with the development and management of Information Technology products and services. Lean traces its roots back to people’s desire to create products. It consists of continuously evolving concepts and deeper thinking on business performance. Since Lean principles are applied in many contexts, tools and methods have multiple sources. However, many of the iconic elements of Lean come from the Toyota Production System.
