We often talk about the value of mentoring, but what actually makes a great mentoring relationship?
Is it having an amazing mentor? Or is it having a mentee who knows what they want to get from the experience?
The answer, of course, is both.
In our next Women in ITSM Community of Practice (CoP) event, we’re going to look at mentoring from both sides of the mirror, because whether you’re the mentor or the mentee, and whether it’s through the formal itSMF UK Mentorship Programme or informal mentoring, you have an important part to play in making the relationship work.
I’m a mentor – how can I be a great one?
Being a mentor isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about knowing how to help someone find their own.
How do you ask the right questions? How do you really listen? When should you challenge and when should you encourage?
How do you share your own experience without simply telling someone, “This is what I did, so you should do it too”?
We’ll explore some practical techniques that can help you become the kind of mentor people really value, someone who creates space, builds confidence, challenges thinking and helps others grow.
I’m a mentee – what should I bring?
Great mentoring isn’t something that simply happens to you.
As a mentee, what should you turn up with? Do you need clear career goals? Should you know exactly where you want to be in five years? What if you don’t?
We’ll talk about how to think about your aspirations and goals, how to prepare for mentoring conversations, the questions worth asking, and how to take ownership of the relationship so that you get real value from it.
And importantly, you don’t need to have it all figured out before you start. Sometimes a great mentor is exactly what you need to help you work out what comes next.

We’ll be joined by speakers who can share their experiences, practical tips and lessons learned from both sides of the mentoring relationship.
