Certification renewal & ITIL CPD points

PeopleCert recently announced that all individuals who hold one or more ITIL 4 certification will need to renew them within three years from their original certification date in order to keep them current.

Over recent months itSMF UK have been working closely with PeopleCert to help establish precisely what the options are for those seeking to renew existing qualifications – you can find a link to a recent webinar in the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

One of these options is via Continual Professional Development (CPD) points and itSMF UK were the first organisation in the world to award CPD points for all our events and activities – exclusive to itSMF UK members.

How does certification renewal work?

The three routes to certification renewal now available are:

  • Collect and log CPD points
Certification renewal requires accumulating 20 annual CPD points per annum for three consecutive years and maintaining an active PeopleCert Plus Membership.
  • Take further courses and certification
Candidates can renew any certification within a product suite such as ITIL 4 by completing an extra course and passing its exam in the same suite before the renew by date.
  • Retake existing certification
Candidates can renew their certification by retaking their original exam before the renewal date.

NOTE:
Candidates not renewing a certification within three years will remain on the Successful Candidates Register (SCR) with a note indicating non-alignment with current requirements. Even if a certification has passed its renew-by date, it will still be accepted as a prerequisite for taking further certifications.

CPD Route to renewal

PeopleCert Plus Membership is required (subscription details can be found at peoplecert.org) but there are no further course or examination costs involved.

PeopleCert have divided CPD-earning activities into three areas (examples of activities are given here):

  • Professional Experience
  • Professional Education
  • Community

A minimum of five
of the 20 points required each year need to be within the Professional Experience category, but otherwise candidates are free to log points in either of the remaining categories.

Earning CPD points with itSMF UK

Thanks to our agreement with PeopleCert, itSMF UK were the first organisation worldwide to offer ITIL CPD points against all of our member services – providing an opportunity for you to log all 20 of the points required to satisfy the annual certification renewal.

Points can be earned in many ways, but the most obvious will be by attending events e.g. a two-day pass for ITSM25 alone will allow you to log 15 points – that’s three quarters of the annual requirement.  But you can also earn points by speaking at events, writing content, being interviewed as part of an ITSM maturity assessment or if you take part in our new mentoring scheme (to be rolled out over the summer).

The number of CPD points will be listed on each event outline but you can also see a complete list in our ‘event schedule at-a-glance‘ document.

FAQs

Here are some FAQs you may find useful:
How do I earn CPD points via itSMF UK event attendance?

All you need to do is ‘sign in’ at the time of registration, in order to link the booking to your member profile, and attend the ‘live’ event.  Points will be automatically awarded following event attendance and you’ll receive a notification via email.

Note: Points cannot be awarded for viewing an event recording – only by attending the ‘live’ event.

How do I view the CPD points earned by attending itSMF UK events?

Points achieved through event attendance can be viewed via the ‘Professional Development’ icon in your member profile where you can download a transcript of the points earned and use this as evidence when you log the CPD points with PeopleCert.

Note: The ‘Professional Development’ icon will appear in the ‘Contents & Features’ section of your member profile once you’ve earned your first points.

How else can I earn CPD points through itSMF UK?

itSMF UK members who speak at events, write content, are interviewed as part of a maturity assessment or are involved in our new mentoring service can manually log CPD points (with supporting evidence from itSMF UK).  Please contact the team for further details.

How do I log my CPD points with PeopleCert?

You can view the official PeopleCert guide here.

When can I start earning CPD points?

The scheme went live on 15 April 2024 and points are now automatically earned for all events attended.

Where can I find more details about the renewal options available?

You can view the recent ‘Certification renewal process & updates’ webinar (presented by Markus Bause, VP Product at PeopleCert) here.
