Big 4 Theme for the day:  People and Skills

Presented by the University of Northampton, Axelos, and SFIA Foundation

Over the years IT Service Management has evolved to incorporate innovations in Service Transition and Service Operations to cope with developments in cloud and utility computing. Today’s ITSM practice draws from an ever-widening portfolio of methodologies, frameworks, and skills including COBIT, LEAN, Agile and DevOps to meet the requirements of a plethora of ISO standards and ITIL revisions (v1, v2, v3, v3 2011 ed.).

As an ITSM practitioner do you recognise that our body of knowledge is continually evolving and that our required skill set is widening? If so, how do you keep your skills up to date? How do you choose what to learn, and how to learn it? Hopefully we will have some of those answers for you in this regional meeting.

Our first session is presented by our hosts, The University of Northampton, a pioneering academic institution where IT Service Management is being taught as a Masters’ degree (MSc). Why is ITSM being taught as an academic subject at Masters’ level? What skills do you learn? Is this something we should all be working towards? How is a Masters’ degree (MSc) different to the ITIL Master qualification? Which one might you choose and why?

What other tools and methods can help you with skills assessment? Do you use a skills framework such as SFIA? What help does that offer? The SFIA Foundation has developed a skills framework to help you identify what skills you might need for your role. In our next session combining a brief talk and a workshop we will review these approaches and apply them to our own roles to see what help they offer for planning your career development path.

But how do you focus your development effort most effectively? How do you measure your success at learning it all? Well, here’s some more good news. Axelos have developed a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) best practice framework and have an online Career Path portal to help you do that. If you don’t already practice CPD to help you develop your skills then you may be missing a trick. In the final session find out what the Axelos CPD framework is all about and learn how to use it to plan your career progression with the help of the Career Path portal.

Throughout the day there will be lots of discussion about other skills we have learned to use in our ITSM practice and how we have applied that learning to help solve some of the ITSM challenges we face at work. Please come along and share your experiences and contribution with your fellow ITSM community members.
