Making changes to your production landscape is one of the riskiest and most invasive things you’ll do whilst working in Service Management. It’s also unavoidable.
The business want change (because standing still is rarely a route to success) but they also want stable service. This balance of stability and responsiveness takes us right back to our Service Operations theory (remember that?)
Release Management is a key enabler for achieving that balance. A structured set of principles and practices to plan, build and deliver a release.
Sounds easy, doesn’t it? But is Release Management about compiling code or managing a monthly maintenance release schedule? Are releases just for functional (code) deliveries or can you ‘release’ hardware and documents too? Are project managers also release managers?
In this SIG, we look at the various roles release management can play and examine where this fits into our daily lives. We’ll briefly remind ourselves what ITIL actually says and then start to look at what this this means for us: using best practice to improve what we deliver... and how we deliver it.
