Join us on 24th September in London for our next SMtech forum on Asset Management which will be facilitated by Rory Canavan – founding consultant of SAM Charter, ITAM Review ITAM Professional of the Year, and a member of WG21 – the working group created to analyse and improve the ISO 19770 family of ITAM standards.
Asset management is a key practice for service management teams, allowing them to understand where their critical software, hardware and information assets reside, and how they are related and configured within the broader IT environment. This information can be essential to the business but is often neglected. Building a CMDB and putting the supporting tooling in place involves a significant investment, but it is money well spent for organisations with a large and complex infrastructure.
Asset managers struggle to find the precise solution to take ‘control’ of their assets. This SMtech event reviews the current tools and practices in this area and highlights the benefits that a more integrated approach to asset management can provide.
** Hosted by MarXtar at the splendid floating Good Hotel in London **

10:15 - 11:15 | Making service management and asset management work together Rory Canavan, SAM Charter Getting Service Management and Asset Management to work and play well together has never been more vital. Like many aspects of life, "perspective is subjective" - but that shouldn't mean that a pinch of compromise here or there should not be given when looking to manage our IT estate. Offering elbow-room to our respective cousins grants us the opportunity to benefit both disciplines. Rory Canavan gives a presentation on how the application of some ISO 19770-2 magic can propel clearer views of the IT assets and services we are tasked with managing. |
11:15 - 11:30 | Break & Networking |
11:30 - 12:30 | To plan for our future, we need the knowledge of our present, given context by our past Mark McGinn and Julian Wigman of MarXtar Assets aren’t static; they move around, they change, they evolve. When managing your assets you need to know more about their lives, where they are, where they’ve been, who’s using them now (or maybe who isn't using them but should be!). Even more than that, you need to link this information to your processes and keep everyone involved informed. During this session, Mark McGinn and Julian Wigman of MarXtar - who are kindly hosting the event - will review the challenges and some of the potential benefits that an integrated approach to asset management can bring. |
12:30 - 13:30 | Lunch & Networking |
13:30 - 14:30 | Our journey so far! Claire Burn, Head of IT Asset Management of HM Revenue & Customs HMRC, like many organisations, have a large, complex IT estate. The move towards digitisation and Cloud services has altered the asset base immensely and HMRC have been on a journey to address their asset management practices, toolset and governance processes. In this session, that journey will be brought to life for you, looking at what the problem was HMRC were looking to address, examining some of the areas that HMRC considered when choosing a solution and then reflect on the chosen approach to planning, delivery and governance. |
14:30 - 14:45 | Break & Networking |
