The Configuration Management System (CMS) should be at the heart of every Service Management System, but often it’s not.  It can be neglected for many reasons including the perception of the journey to get there means it is put in the too difficult pile.  But as organisations' service management systems evolve and mature the CMS cannot continue to be neglected.

It’s time to go on a journey to a better CMS place!

In this free session for ITSMF members the Service Transition Special Interest Group will explore the challenges, perceptions and issues associated with heading off on a CMS journey.  We’ll first set the scene with how, our hosts, O2 have approached their CMS journey before hearing from other speakers with CMS expertise on elements including federation, automated discovery, “what” goes into a CMDB and the “why” it needs to and maybe even some of the things to leave out.

The SIG day format typically follows a pattern where a subject matter expert will talk for 15-20 minutes to introduce a topic and show how they solved specific problems, participants will split into groups to discuss those problems (helping to define them further and possibly offer solutions) and then play the results back to the audience.

Maybe you haven’t started your CMS journey, maybe you are part way along it. The key is collaboration. The ‘experts’ don’t know everything, and in fact actively seek out people who have approached both new and old problems in different and creative ways.  The ITSMF is a strong and diverse community whose members cover the full spectrums of experience, industry specialisation and thought leadership. You don’t have to be a thought leader to come and join, we want you and your willingness to contribute your experience - no matter how big or small.
