Blue Sky Thinking at The House of Lords Event

On the 3rd July we hosted an exclusive event at the House of Lords with Lord St. John of Bletso, to discuss the future of IT Service Management and sustainable computing. The spectacular venue and warm welcome from Lord St. John of Bletso started our day in good stead.
The afternoon kicked off with Yell's IT Director, Phil Ives, who didn't provide the nuts and bolts of IT service management but what's actually relevant in shaping IT service management from his personal perspective; "All of a sudden service management is moving from down in the engine room and focusing on projects for business growth". Phil gave an overview of Yell's IT scale and performance; 4400 users, 2 data centres, 1000+ servers and 92% customer satisfaction (internal); "its bullet proof, even where it doesn't need to be"….quite insightful!
Richard Barrington, Head of Public Policy at Sun Microsystems followed with a passionate presentation entitled 'sustainable computing from perception to reality'. A presentation packed full of interesting facts, figures and opinion relating to green computing and how "intellectual people and IT could change the world". Richard discussed the need for virtualization and showcased some of Sun's latest developments including the 'virtual desktop solution' which provides secure access to information and applications through virtual desktop sessions across any operating system.
After Phil and Richards presentations, a fantastic afternoon tea was served on the terraces. Luckily between heavy showers, the sunshine and blue sky made a welcome appearance, allowing us to admire the famous view from a different perspective.
Lord St. John of Bletso continued his sincere hospitality by taking the group on a tour of the Houses of Parliament, including The House of Lords and The House of Commons, a rare opportunity which couldn't be missed and ended the day perfectly.
This was our first in a series of events focusing on 'the future of IT'. Thanks to Lord St. John of Bletso, Phil Ives and Richard Barrington for making our first one very topical and successful.
