itSMF UK and TM Forum working together
Integrated Service-Oriented Management
For some time now, itSMF has been working jointly with the TMF to define how the work of both organisations can be used in an integrated manner. TM Forum is a global industry association focused on transforming business processes, operations and systems for managing and monetizing on-line Information, Communications and Entertainment services, while itSMF is the forum for promoting best practice and standards within IT Service Management (including ITIL). This co-operation has already led to the publication of a detailed technical report (TR143: ITIL & eTOM Building Bridges) that examined a number of areas where the ITIL framework and the TM Forum's Business Process Framework (eTOM) could grow and work together. Following on from this, the recent publication of Release 8.0 of the eTOM framework embedded direct support for 14 of the ITIL V3 processes identified as critical for companies involved in application of both frameworks.
This initiative is now blossoming into a number of areas of interaction, covering a wide range of activities within TM Forum and itSMF. These include further work around the eTOM framework itself through process flows that show specific worked examples of integrated working, as well as other areas such as the TM Forum Information Framework (SID) and how it could provide a structure that can be applied with the CMS/CMDB approach. The overall context is to develop areas where we can provide additional information from our collective members that will provide useful information for our wider membership in applying eTOM alongside ITIL and other IT Service Management frameworks.
In order to deliver these initiatives, and to facilitate interaction between TM Forum and itSMF Members in pursuing the work, a joint "Integrated Service-Oriented Management" group has been set up with a small membership from both communities, under a liaison agreement that has been established between the two organisations. This group is responsible for developing a view of the joint vision and roadmap for the work in conjunction with highlighting the work areas to be pursued. This "ISOM" group also has an important role in managing the overall liaison between the two organisations and ensuring that the work is progressed appropriately in both TM Forum and itSMF.
Further information on the joint work between itSMF and TM Forum, and its focus through ISOM, will be available shortly on the websites of both organisations.
