2006 Award Winners
On Tuesday 14th November the 15th Annual itSMF Gala Awards Dinner took place at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham. Aidan Lawes, CEO itSMF presided over the event which saw Awards handed out to 6 winners in 5 categories.
The purpose of these awards is to annually recognise outstanding achievements in the contribution to IT Service Management. At the individual and corporate level, all the nominated candidates provide first class examples of what can be achieved and set targets to which we can all aspire.
Of the 5 awards the first and the longest-running is awarded on absolute attainment basis. The others require nominations to be submitted for judging by an independent and knowledgeable panel which assesses the entries according to a defined set of criteria.

Student of the Year
The judges were faced with a host of strong entries making judging a difficult job.
However, decisions were made and the first award for the Student of the Year went to the candidate scoring the highest mark in the UK and Northern Ireland in the ISEB Managers Certificate examination. This year there were over 2000 candidates so winning represents an ever greater achievement.
To present the award, a cheque for £250 and certificates of achievement, was Pete Bayley, Director - Qualification Products on behalf of the British Computer Society:

Innovation of the Year
The next Award was the Innovation of the Year, which is awarded to the organisation that, in the judging panels view, launched the most novel project or service that had been developed and brought to market over the last 12 months.
Colin Rudd of ITEMS and the itSMF Finance Director presented the award.

Service Champion
The Service Champion of the Year was presented by Maggie Kneller, itSMF Vice Chair, and acting CEO itSMF.
This award is presented to the individual considered by the judging panel that has developed and implemented best practice within their organisation. Meeting key objectives, dimensions and challenges, and who has made an outstanding contribution to the Service Management Industry during this year.

Maggie Kneller, Chair of the judges panel for Service Champion of the Year said; "This year we had a tough decision, because several of the entries for the Service Champion of the Year were extremely good. The winner should embody everything which is required in an IT Service Manager."
The winner was: Martyn Sayce, HBOS Personal Lending
Project of the Year
The next award is for Project of the Year is presented by Ivor Macfarlane, itSMF International UK Representative and this is awarded to a project that has been developed over the last year and related closely to IT Service Improvement.This Award is aimed at customer organisations implementing solutions internally, and awarded to the organisation that, in the view of the judging panel, has implemented the most successful and/or challenging Service Management Project during the year.

Paul Rappaport Award for Contributions to Service Management
The final award of the evening was the Paul Rappaport Award for Contributions to Service Management.This is an award given to an individual, in the judges view, who has made the most outstanding contribution over a number of years to IT Service management.It is awarded to an individual that has excelled in this area.
Aidan was still at the podium at this point in the evening and joked, "The next part of the show would be the Paul Rappaport award.However, this year the judges felt that the nominations put forward didn't reach up to the expectations and this year and for as long as I can remember, this award will not be presented."
Colin Rudd was one of the three colleagues that presented Aidan Lawes as the winner of the Paul Rappaport Award for Contributions to Service Management.Colin said; "Aidan's name is synonymous with Service Management worldwide.Indeed Service Management, the itSMF and the Institute of Service Management would not be where they are today without Aidan's massive personal contributions.
It was also very appropriate that he should be awarded the Paul Rappaport Lifetime Achievement Award as he and Paul were very good friends for many years and worked together closely in the formative years of the itSMF."
