IT Skills at the Frontiers

Title: IT Skills at the Frontiers
Topic/Stream: People
Presentation Synopsis: The presentation describes how UKBA have gone about Professionalising their IT Department over the last 2 years. This has started with an organisational restructuring and lots of recruitment activity, mainly to reduce the dependency on Consultants and Contractors. Like many Government departments the Border Agency didn’t really have a professional home for people that specalise in delivering IT Programmes and Projects. We have created one, that functions much like an internal consultancy. It provides the programmes with business analysts, technical architects, project managers, and PMO. Whilst they undertake a variety of assignments their personal and professional development is kept in the new department. This presentation describes how we set that up, how we have made the recruitment work and how we have used SFIA and ITIL.
